Safer Communities Alliance is a Kenyan community-based organization (CBO) that uses art and creative peace trainings, alongside technology-enabled self-reliance skills, to help young people steer clear of crime and to build peace and cohesion within Kenyan communities.
Who We Are
A community that reaches young people before crime ever does.
Crime rarely starts as a single bad decision — it grows out of idle time, unresolved tension, and few positive outlets for young people to channel their energy and their voice. Safer Communities Alliance works upstream of that. Through capacity building, art and creative peace trainings, and self-reliance skills delivered with the help of technology, we give young people constructive alternatives to crime, and we help their communities build the everyday peace and cohesion that keeps everyone safer.

Alongside our youth programs, we also run capacity-building trainings for those who work directly with offenders — helping practitioners strengthen peace and cohesion in the communities they serve.

The Problem We're Solving
Crime shouldn't be a young person's only option.
Across Kenya, many young people grow up with few creative outlets, limited economic opportunity, and communities where tension and mistrust simmer under the surface. Left unaddressed, that mix pushes young people toward crime and pulls communities further apart. Safer Communities Alliance steps in before that happens — using art and creative peace trainings to give young people a constructive voice, and self-reliance skills to give them a real economic alternative, one relationship and one skill at a time.

Join the Self-Reliance & Skills Track
Technology-enabled vocational training, small-business mentorship, and life-skills coaching that give young people real, marketable self-reliance — a constructive path that competes with the pull of crime, not just a certificate. Cohorts run in partnership with local trainers and employers ready to hire.

Creative Peace Trainings
Naomi Mwelu
Safer Communities Alliance was founded on the belief that keeping young people out of crime isn't only a security problem — it's a community problem, and community is where the solution has to live. Naomi leads the Alliance's work designing art and creative peace trainings, plus technology-enabled self-reliance programs, that give young people constructive alternatives to crime.
She also leads capacity-building trainings for those who work directly with offenders, helping practitioners strengthen peace and cohesion in the Kenyan communities they serve.

How someone moves through our program
Building peace isn't a single event — it's a sequence. Here's the path we walk with each young person.
Welcome & Intake
We meet young people in their communities — through schools, chiefs' offices, and youth groups — understand their circumstances and goals, and connect them to a mentor and a creative peace cohort.
Creative Engagement
Participants join workshops — theatre, art, storytelling circles — that create a low-pressure space to build confidence, process conflict, and channel their voice into something constructive.
Skills & Self-Reliance
Alongside creative work, participants build a concrete skill — trade training, small-business basics, digital literacy — matched to real local demand.
Community Bridge-Building
We facilitate dialogue between young people, their families, and their neighborhoods, strengthening the everyday relationships that keep communities peaceful and cohesive.
Ongoing Mentorship
Support continues well past graduation — regular check-ins, peer circles, and an open door for as long as it's needed.
